What to do at Southburn Archaeological Museum

Our Activity Room offers a large selection of “hands on” activities for all. You have the chance to handle and investigate real archaeological artefacts and try your skill at dating pottery sherds.

We hold a selection of weaving and spinning accessories based on archaeological finds which will let you trace the manufacture of clothes from the fleece to the fabric; this includes a fully working warp weighted loom and tablet weaving jigs.

Grind corn the same way our ancestors did using a replica beehive quern stone, try your luck at ancient board games or create a Roman mosaic. For younger visitors there are lots of colouring sheets and puzzles.

For pre-arranged group visits we can offer clay working using air drying clay.
