We’re Moving!

Southburn Archaeological Museum (SAM) is to have a short season in 2016 and will re-open in new, improved premises in 2017

Planning Permission has been received from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council for the new SAM buildings at Green Lane between Driffield and NaffertonWe can now firm up on our plans for a short 2016 season from March to early June at Southburn before we move the Southburn Museum and collection to the Green Lane site in the summer of 2016 and prepare it to open for a new season in March 2017.

Following the news in 2015 that JSR wanted SAM to vacate our current premises at Southburn which they need for other uses, SAM and JSR have worked together to secure the future of the Museum at new premises based at a former office at Green Lane near Nafferton and an additional newly reconditioned modular building and a portakabin storage facility.

This site has a number of advantages including being accessible without volunteers and visitors having to pass through working parts of the farm, it has its own kitchen/utility room  and a toilet.  It also has a dedicated parking area.

Whilst, in some ways, it is disappointing to leave Southburn and the premises originally given to Brian Hebblewhite by the late John Rymer, founder of JSR Farms for his collection of ancient artefacts, the new premises offer a number of significant advantages and the level of investment and practical support  that JSR has been willing to make is indicative of their continuing commitment and we thank them for it.  The Southburn collection will remain intact and will continue to be at the heart of our displays.
